5 artworks you must see at Louvre


Louvre is the largest museums in the world, hosting one of the most important collections of art and antiquities. It has more than 350 000 artworks, including paintings and sculptures, Greek, Egyptian and Oriental antiquities and Islamic art objects. If you are only visiting Paris and want to pay a visit to Louvre also, you should know that it is impossible to admire the entire collection in just one day. However, there are five artworks that you should definitely see when going to Louvre:

1. Venus de Milo.
It is an ancient Greek marble statue which is believed to represent Aphrodite, the Greek goddess of beauty. It is believed thatit had been created sometime around 100 BC and it was discovered in 1820 by a peasant. The arms of the statues have never been found.

2. Mona Lisa (also known as Gioconda).
This masterpiece by Leonardo da Vinci is the most famous painting in the world. The painting is the portrait of a woman with a mysterious smile. It is believed that Mona Lisa was Leonardo da Vinci’s favorite painting also, as the artist took the painting with him everywhere he went. Mona Lisa is now protected by a glass wall, after someone had attempted to destroy it with a knife.
 
3. Nike of Samothrace.
This Greek marble sculpture represents Nike, the goddess of victory. It was discovered in 1863 and it is believed it had been created in the 2nd century BC. The statue celebrated a sea battle victory near Rhodos. The statue is also known as “the Winged Victory of Samothrace”.

4. The Dying Slave.
This marble sculpture is the work of Michelangelo, who created it between 1513-1516 for the tomb of Pope Julius II. The artist willingly left unfinished parts in the status, representing figures imprisoned in marble.

5. The raft of the Medusa.
Theodore Gericault completed this painting in 1819. The artist got his inspiration for the painting from a shipwreck that had happened three years earlier. The raft of the Medusa depicts the moment when the survivors see a ship approaching them.

Of course, there are many more spectacular artworks to be admired at this vast museum. Do not forget to also take a good look at the controversial new entrance, the 21 meters tall pyramid, made out of glass
